Abrasion Resistant Steel (AR Plate)

A quenched and tempered martensitic steel plate specified by surface hardness (typically 400-640 HBW) rather than by yield strength, used wherever sliding or impact abrasion wears a component out.

What is abrasion resistant plate?

AR plate is a low-alloy carbon steel that is reheated, water quenched and tempered to a controlled martensitic structure. The specification is written around hardness because, in sliding abrasion, service life scales closely with surface hardness. Stanhard is supplied from 400 HBW to 640 HBW.

How hardness translates to life

Moving from 400 HBW to 500 HBW typically doubles liner life in sliding abrasion; above 550 HBW the gain comes with reduced bendability and impact toughness, so grade selection is a duty decision, not a 'harder is better' decision.
